Stars, c’est de la pop à la fois mélodique et mélancolique. Pas forcément triste, pas forcément joyeuse. Comme la petite neige qui vient mouiller, le frisson d’humidité, la saison morte est là, et Stars s’amène à Montréal pour nous le rappeler.
Les allusions à la neige ne sont pas de mon cru. C’est la chanteuse Amy Millan qui en fait la mention lorsque je lui demande d’où vient l’inspiration pour le dernier album. Peut-être un peu agacée de toujours se le faire demander par les journalistes, mais tout de même, il y a une réponse: “Incessant never ending snow, it’s kind of an inspiration in a way.
It definitely as a massive influence on the band. I think that where we are, geographically, and where we live, and what’s the weather on that day, has the biggest influence on the band.”
Pas surprenant que les membres s’enferment ensemble dans une pièce tout l’hiver pour composer et que le sentiment qui en ressort soit de nature si introspective… Et cette neige, elle semble porteuse de bien, mais aussi porteuse de malchance, à d’autres moments. Souvenir de tournée, et premier show annulé en 10 de carrière: “We got snowed out of Denver, Colorado. We were supposed to play there, and there’s a 32 cars accident on the highway and a massive snow storm. After that, we were in a bus for 60 hours straight to try to get to the next show that was in Texas. Being on a bus for that long felt like I was going to the moon. It’s a very strange feeling to be stuck on a bus for 3 days. And there was nothing around, we were in the middle of Utah.“
Le band a tout de même profité de la saison chaude pour parcourir le monde et jouer dans multiples festivals. Pour couronner le tout, ils terminent une tournée automnale en Amérique du Nord avec Young Galaxy et l’excellent Wild Nothing (qui malheureusement ne sera pas de la partie pour le spectacle de décembre) à Montréal le 4 décembre prochain au Métropolis.
Au-delà de l’avantage de coucher dans son propre lit le soir, Montréal a une place toute spéciale pour Stars. Amy raconte que l’énergie à Montréal est définitivement différente: “Every place that you play has a different energy, but as we say there’s no place like home. It’s a cliché, but it’s true. In Montreal, the audience is always very energetic and explosive, and I’m very excited to play the Metropolis show. The last time we played there, it was definitely one the highlights of my career. The audience was incredible. And I think there’s a feeling because they know: you are there, you belong to the same city, you walk in the same streets, and the same stores and restaurants. You live together. You’re comrade, you’re from the same place, and that ownership, it creates a kind of community in a night that you can’t really create somewhere else in the world.”
On lui souhaite que ce soit un show mémorable (ce le sera) car Amy sera en congé forcé pour quelques mois: elle attend un bébé. Après la mini-tournée dans les environs avec Broken Social Scene, Amy ajoute: “I know it’s gonna be really fun because I haven’t been on tour with them in a year. I don’t even know who’s gonna show up at any given day so, it really depends on who is in the city. Everyone’s invited, and that’s one of the nicest thing about Broken Social Scene“. Ce sera le temps de retourner à l’abri de la neige, bien au chaud au studio et d’enregistrer les états d’âmes du band face à l’hiver. Et vivement qu’il neige, ça semble leur porter fruits plus souvant qu’autrement.
